When Life Gives You Nazis

Give the Nazis bananas:

And pretty pink banners!

They keep coming back year after year. Since the 1990s, neo-Nazi demonstrators invade the village of Wunsiedel in south Germany every November to commemorate the National Heroes’ Remembrance Day by visiting the grave of Adolf Hitler’s Deputy, Rudolf Hess, which was located in the village until it was dissolved in 2005 when the lease agreement ran out.

This year Wunsiedel gave it another try – with a completely new approach.

Instead of taking the neo-Nazis seriously, this time they decided to play a prank on them. Under the slogan “Right against right: (“rechts gegen rechts”), Wunsiedel’s residents gave the neo-Nazis’ march a new purpose.

For each meter the neo-Nazis marched last Saturday throughout the village, local companies donated 10 euro for a project called “Exit”, a NGO that supports neo-Nazis who are ready to leave the milieu.

The neo-Nazis themselves only learned of the villagers’ prank while their march was already underway, walking through the village and carrying their flags and wreaths solemnly.

To make them aware of what they were inadvertently taking part in, the people of Wunsiedel put up colorful posters along their route, thanking the neo-Nazis for their participation.

“Wenn das der Führer wüsste” (“If the Führer would know”) said a pink banner they had to walk by, “Brisk like greyhounds, tough like leather, and generous like never before” (“Flink wie die Windhunde, zäh wie Leder, grosszügig wie nie”) said another one, in reference to former Nazi slogans from the Third Reich.

Even food was provided for the neo-Nazi protesters, who tried to ignore the prank as much as possible. Under a banner saying “Mein Mampf” (“My food”) instead of “Mein Kampf” (the title of Hitler’s book), the village offered bananas to the demonstrators.

On the pavement, village residents had placed landmarks informing the marching neo-Nazis how much money they had already raised by walking through the village – with a total of 10,000 Euro in donations collected for the NGO.

Congratulations, Nazis! “Generous like never before” indeed! See you next year! And take a banana for the road. You earned it.

US Protected At Least 1000 Nazis After WWII

NY Times has the information

In the decades after World War II, the C.I.A. and other United States agencies employed at least a thousand Nazis as Cold War spies and informants and, as recently as the 1990s, concealed the government’s ties to some still living in America, newly disclosed records and interviews show.

At the height of the Cold War in the 1950s, law enforcement and intelligence leaders like J. Edgar Hoover at the F.B.I. and Allen Dulles at the C.I.A. aggressively recruited onetime Nazis of all ranks as secret, anti-Soviet “assets,” declassified records show. They believed the ex-Nazis’ intelligence value against the Russians outweighed what one official called “moral lapses” in their service to the Third Reich.

The agency hired one former SS officer as a spy in the 1950s, for instance, even after concluding he was probably guilty of “minor war crimes.”

And in 1994, a lawyer with the C.I.A. pressured prosecutors to drop an investigation into an ex-spy outside Boston implicated in the Nazis’ massacre of tens of thousands of Jews in Lithuania, according to a government official.

Aleksandras Lileikis was a Nazi officer implicated in 60,000 Jews’ deaths. He later worked for the C.I.A. before immigrating. Credit U.S. Department of Justice

Lileikis was apparently massacring Jews from Vilna ghetto (Lithuania) in the killing pits of the Ponary woods. He is just one of the creeps that our government protected. The article states that we protected Adolf Eichmann’s right hand man, for example.

I recommend that everyone go to the link and read this. It will make it much easier to watch the pain of ebola, immigration, crappy economy, etc. You won’t care.

The Wit and Wisdom of Adolf Hitler

Starve a Jew, feed a fever.

In its August, 2013 edition, the popular and publicly-funded Palestinian children’s magazine Al Zayzafuna resumed the practice of publishing homages to Adolf Hitler, despite the fact that this practice had prompted UNESCO, in 2011, to cancel its funding for the magazine. The August, 2013 homage was captioned “Among Hitler’s Sayings,” and took the form of a list of quaint aphorisms attributed to the genocidal dictator, with the apparent aim of convincing young readers of Hitler’s timeless and worldly wisdom. The homage remains in place today, at the Al Zayzafuna website.

The February, 2011 Al Zayzafuna item that had triggered UNESCO’s de-funding was the supposedly whimsical tale of a little Palestinian girl to whom Hitler appears in a dream. During the encounter, Hitler explains to the child, “I killed them [the Jews] so that you would know that they are a people who wreaks havoc on Earth.” Hitler then adds, “I ask of you to be patient and enduring with the torment that Palestine is suffering at their [the Jews’] hands.”

Whimsical! Tra-la!

I have prepared the following brief explanation of the deliberate process by which Palestinians were indoctrinated into the Nazi ideology of hate and incitement before and during WWII.

In the late 1930s, Nazis began recruiting Palestinians to engage in espionage and terrorism actions for which the Nazis would supply funding and weapons. Along with promises of cooperation, Nazis promised the Arabs that if the war ended in an Axis victory, Arabs would be given all lands and homes owned by Jews, as well as access to “beautiful Jewish girls.”

A-ha! Cherchez la femme! Who wouldn’t collaborate with the Third Reich for a chance at a date with Bar Refaeli or Scarlett Johansson (you read right)?

To be serious for a moment, it is under appreciated how infected with Nazi virulence and propaganda is the Arab attitude toward Jews. Remember the Jordanian cleric we quoted the other day? The one who said Allah himself had granted the land of Israel to the Jews, and that anyone who preached otherwise was an apostate? Why isn’t that the prevailing Arab opinion? Where do the so-called Palestinians (Arab occupiers of Jewish land, more like) get their pathological loathing?

Who’s up for another of Hitler’s “quaint aphorisms”? A Rosenblum by any other name would smell as sweet.

Our Friends, the Nazis

Hey, don’t laugh.

Or cry:

At a secret site in Germany, after World War II ended, Americans used the services of Nazi scientists to develop advanced techniques for the investigation of Soviet prisoners, including the use of “truth serum” (LSD) and mind controlling methods which they would use on prisoners.

The doctors and elite Nazi scientists helped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the US intelligence system test the use of LSD and other investigative techniques that would help them extract information from the Soviet spies they had caught. The work took place in a German base named “Camp King”, near Frankfurt. In 1945, the site served as a detention center for the German scientists, but within three years, the detainees were the Soviets, while the German scientists became collaborators with the Americans.

An important asset for the Americans was Dr. Walter Schreiber, the Third Reich’s former Surgeon General who was later moved to an Air Force base in the US. The services of former Deputy Surgeon General of the Third Reich Dr. Kurt Blome, who was involved in biological warfare research, were also used in the base.

Ew. It’s one thing to plunder German rocket ingenuity, as we did with Werner von Braun (“A man whose allegiance/Is ruled by expedience”). But the Nazi eugenicists? What possible common cause would we have with the likes of Mengele’s bosses? (The very idea of a Surgeon General for the Third Reich should make us sick. It does.)

The motive behind the establishment of “Operation Paperclip” was a suspicion raised by top security and military American leadership’s memos – that the US and the Soviet Union may enter a “total war” in 1952, a war that will include the use of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. For that reason, the Americans decided to use every means at their disposal, including Adolf Hitler’s top scientists and the chemical warfare they developed under the Third Reich, including sarin gas and biological weapons.

[T]he CIA soon showed an interest in using LSD outside of the battlefield, and in intelligence warfare. At the time, Americans were examining options of mind manipulation by using drugs, hypnosis and electric shock, in an attempt to match similar Soviet techniques of interrogation.

Take a second here. The Soviets were our allies in WWII (hard not to use “” around allies); the Nazis, the most evil regime the world had ever seen (until Mao?), were our enemies. (I’m going to excuse Genghis Khan out of multicultural sensitivity.) Yet we were cuddling Nazi “doctors” (had to use “” there) before the last mortar was fired, the last camp liberated.

It can’t have been because we didn’t know. Our interest in them meant of course we knew. What else did we want from the “Surgeon General” of the Third Reich? Cold remedies? Come on.

We were expecting “total war” (from ‘shrooms to mushroom clouds) with our “ally” less than a decade after celebrating victory in the ETO with them. There had to be a reason. Maybe we knew something there too.

Maybe we knew that Stalin had been ally of the Nazis too. (No need for “”; they signed a nonaggression pact.) Maybe we knew something about Lenin’s and Stalin’s “cleansing” of any reactionary forces or beliefs (which process was anything but clean). Maybe we knew something about Stalin’s role in the Ukraine famine that took millions of lives (not that we learned anything about it in the New York Times).

Churchill knew:

‘Terrible things have happened. A tide of Russian domination is sweeping forward . . . After it is over, the territories under Russian control will include the Baltic provinces, all of eastern Germany, all Czechoslovakia, a large part of Austria, the whole of Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

‘This constitutes one of the most melancholy events in the history of Europe and one to which there has been no parallel.

He got that right. He even wanted to go to war with the Soviets to push them back—even using German forces as they surrendered! But no one else had the strength or the nerve. Instead, they hunkered down for forty-five years of Cold War. Eastern Europe—half a continent—was lost to freedom for two generations. The wounds are still raw today.

Every war is dirty, ugly, cruel. The dogs of war maul the innocent as well as the guilty. It’s no different in a Cold War, even if no (or few) shots are fired. Maybe the “Surgeon General” of the Third Reich had clean hands.

Maybe. Doubtful. Nah…

They may have been Nazis, but they were our Nazis. That was not right, but when presented with the monsters of Hitler and Stalin (and later Mao), what the [bleep] was one supposed to do?

Pity About the H-Word

Sorry to all you “folks” who perished in the camps.

An official statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust issued by EU High Representative Lady Catherine Ashton, does not identify who those victims were. The brief statement reads,

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

Today the international community remembers the victims of the Holocaust. We honour every one of those brutally murdered in the darkest period of European history. We also want to pay a special tribute to all those who acted with courage and sacrifice to protect their fellow citizens against persecution.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we must keep alive the memory of this tragedy. It is an occasion to remind us all of the need to continue fighting prejudice and racism in our own time. We must remain vigilant against the dangers of hate speech and redouble our commitment to prevent any form of intolerance. The respect of human rights and diversity lies at the heart of what the European Union stands for.

We in Bloodthirstan also bow our heads in memory of the homosexuals, Catholics, and gypsies who died in the “tragedy”. If we left anyone out—sorry, communists!—please drop us a line to remind us.

One serious comment on the use of “tragedy” to describe the attempted (and largely accomplished) annihilation of Jews from the continent of Europe. (Oh Jews—of course!) An airplane crash is a tragedy, an avalanche. The long-planned, carefully organized, fully funded extermination of a race of people (as Jews were defined by Nazis) is not a tragedy. 9/11 was not a tragedy. The Marathon bombing was not a tragedy. Tragedies are acts of nature, or other unforeseen occurrences. They may be subject to blame or responsibility—was faulty maintenance at fault for the plane crash?; did poor trail grooming lead to the avalanche?—but tragedies are not written about in advance (Mein Kampf), not an agenda item at a conference (Wannsee).

That a spokesman for Europe can’t bring herself to mention the six million Jews* brutally murdered across the continent, and can’t even call the crime by its proper name, is actually kind of scary. She has nothing to say to the Jewish state of Israel.

* A conservative estimate.

Les Juifs Sont Faits

“Jews out of France”? Very well.

C’est votre funérailles:

It is nothing short of chilling.

A video, taken on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, shows masses of French protesters marching down a Paris thoroughfare chanting openly anti-Semitic slogans and calling on Jews to get out of France.

Chants include “Jews, France is not yours!” “Jews out of France” and “The story of the gas chambers is bull***!” At one point, in a show of raw, seething hatred, the crowd simply spits out the word “Jew, Jew, Jew!”

Many of the marchers can be seen giving the “quenelle” inverted Nazi salute popularized by anti-Semitic comedian Dieudonne. The gesture is seen as a way for anti-Semites to give a Nazi salute without incurring the wrath of authorities – although one demonstrator can be seen giving a full-on Nazi salute as well.

It was part of a “Day of Anger” called by extremists in support of Dieudonne last Sunday. French police estimated that around 17,000 people had attended the march.

Seventeen thousand! Do you suppose they were all Arab?

Isn’t the iconography delicious? The French tricouleur as backdrop for a neo-Nazi salute.

Why is a “comedian” doing and saying such despicable things?

It pays:

French police seized 650,000 euros and $15,000 in cash during a raid on the home of anti-Semitic comic Dieudonne M’bala M’bala as part of a probe into suspected fraud, sources said Wednesday to AFP.

I am a believer in a strong Israel and a strong diaspora, but the two may be mutually exclusive.

I just hope the French Jews making aliyah in record numbers reenact this scene from Saving Private Ryan as they board the boats or planes to take them to the land where Jews may live free (if not completely without fear):

Nazis and the Women Who Love Them

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach challenges the “beautiful people” in Hollywood (Emma Thompson, Anthony Bordain, Roger Waters) on their hatred of Israel.

Good for him. They deserve to have their faces rubbed in their messes.

We here at approach the subject from the other side:

In an interview with Russia Today TV on December 7, Farouq Qaddoumi, the former political bureau head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said that Arabs were “enthusiastic supporters” of the Nazis during World War II.

The remarks were translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that we were enthusiastic supporters of Germany,” Qaddoumi said in the interview, when asked by the interviewer, “Were you sympathetic with Nazi Germany in WWII?”

The interviewer, seeking to clarify, then said, “You supported Hitler and his people.” Qaddoumi replied, “Germany, yes. This was common among the Palestinians, especially since our enemy was Zionism, and we saw that Zionism was hostile to Germany, and vice versa.”

Recently, MEMRI posted clips from two separate rallies at Al-Quds University, in which Islamic Jihad members, cheered on by other students, take part in a live performance at which they brandish imitation assault rifles and black Islamist flags, and give Nazi salutes.

In October, reacting to ongoing incidents of incitement and anti-Semitism by the Palestinian Authority, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu noted the deep link between the Palestinian national movement and Germany’s Nazi regime.

Netanyahu noted that Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the founder of “Palestinian nationalism”, was an admirer and supporter of Adolf Hitler, had met the Nazi Fuhrer on numerous occasions and was actively involved in encouraging Hitler and his henchmen in their project of annihilating the Jewish people.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has consistently said that any future Palestinian state would be free of Israelis and Jews, much like the Nazis wanted Germany to be “Judenrein” (free of Jews).

These are your Arab occupiers of Judea and Samaria, you leftist Jew-haters.

Though Hitler wasn’t all bad, you know:

In an interview on the Lebanese Murr TV in July 2012, Lebanese singer Najwa Karam was asked whose attributes she would pick in order to create her ideal man. Without hesitation, she responded: “I would choose Hitler for his rhetoric, his ability of persuasion.”

Following are excerpts from the interview, posted on the Internet on July 12, 2012:

Interviewer: If you could mix together several people to form the ideal man in your view, whom would you choose?

Najwa Karam: Several people – not just one?

Interviewer: Yes, let’s say brains from one person and good nature from another.

Najwa Karam: I would choose Hitler for his rhetoric, his ability of persuasion. I would choose Richard Gere for his charm, Al Pacino for being street-wise, Hugo or Shakespeare for their romanticism…

Interviewer: Romeo and Juliet.

Najwa Karam: I’d like to combine them all together. And I’d choose Onassis for his money.

Interviewer: Nice. What are you going to sing for us?

Najwa Karam: Hold on a sec, there’s Einstein. We forgot that. For his brains.

That’s a lot of men. But then Najwa Karam is a lot of woman.

But might I suggest to the lovely Ms. Karam that if she’s looking for a model of rhetorical persuasion, she might site a more contemporary example:

A Tale of Two Continents

On Friday the first baby was born at the IDF field hospital set up the day before in the Philippines to help deal with the destruction Typhoon Haiyan has left in its wake. The mayor of Bogo City where the hospital was established announced the baby will be named “Israel.”

The IDF delegation’s field hospital began treating the sick and injured on Friday, delivering its first baby the same day.

“Israel,” the male baby, was born in his eighth month, weighing 2.15 kilograms (4.7 pounds). He was delivered by 5 members of the delegate’s gynecological staff, including 3 doctors and 2 midwives.

The field hospital includes x-ray and delivery rooms, and is able to absorb 500 patients a day.

So, if I wish for a Category Five super-storm to flatten Europe, killing thousands, it’s only out of humanitarian, interfaith concerns:

Demonizing Israel and the Jews documents that 150 million out of 400 million adult Europeans mistakenly believe that Israel is exterminating the Palestinian Arabs, much in the same way the Nazis sought a systemic extermination of Jews.

The news follows reports earlier this month that a report by the Advisory Council on International Affairs called for the Netherlands to distance itself from Israel and develop closer ties with Hamas.

European anti-Semitism has been on the rise over the past few months. A study released ahead of the 75th anniversary of “Kristallnacht”, which saw Nazi thugs smash up Jewish businesses and synagogues, found that 66 percent of European Jews considered anti-Semitism “a fairly big or very big” problem in their country, according to a report by AFP.

Of course, if a megastorm did hit Europe, below-sea-level Holland would be swamped. That would be divine retribution. If Adolf Eichmann admires your participation in the Holocaust, you’re due a Katrina or a Sandy.

If Asia is a continent, Europe is incontinent.

Partners in Peace

Sit down over a glass of schnapps and a slice of German chocolate cake, and let’s talk peace:

For at least the second time in five months, Arab residents of Beit Umar in the Palestinian Authority (PA) have placed a Nazi flag over a major thoroughfare where Jews pass in their vehicles.

Beit Umar is located a half hour south of Jerusalem, between Halhoul and the Etzion Bloc, not far from Hevron.

A similar event took place at Beit Umar in May, when hundreds of residents of Gush Etzion who drove down Highway 60 were astounded to see an oversized Nazi flag flying next to a mosque in the Arab town.

In a recent key seech, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu quoted numerous historical sources showing that the leader of the Palestinian Arabs in the first half of the 20th century, Mufti Hajj Amin Al-Husseini, was “one of the initiators of the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe,” and that he was constantly encouraging the Nazi leadership to annihilate the Jews, throughout the war. He cited evidence that the Mufti even visited the gas chambers at Auschwitz with Adolf Eichmann.

“The Mufti is still a greatly admired figure in the Palestinian national movement,” said Netanyahu. “These are the weeds that need to be uprooted,” he said. “The root of the conflict is the deep resistance among a hard core of Palestinians to the right of the Jewish people to its own state in Israel.”

While we’re having our Oktoberfest (is that the strains of Meistersinger I hear?), let’s toast the memory of another Arab who couldn’t be with us today:

Ten years after his death, top Gaza terrorist and Hamas founder Ahmad Yassin is remembered fondly in the Palestinian Authority. Last Friday, PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash eulogized the arch-terrorist, sating [sic] that he was an “exalted national Palestinian figure,” an “icon,” and that Palestinian children are taught about his “legacy, Jihad, actions, and morality.”

Has it been ten years already? Time flies when dead sheikhs attract flies:

He joined the Muslim Brotherhood while studying at Cairo’s Al-Azhar University and adopted the movement’s belief that the rule of Islam should be imposed everywhere. After returning to Gaza, Yassin became actively involved in politics.

Yassin was arrested in 1984 and sentenced to 13 years in jail for illegal possession of arms, the establishment of a military organization and calling for the annihilation of Israel.

During the first intifada in 1987, Sedan notes, “Yassin transformed his Islamic Organization into a new body called Hamas. An acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas means zeal in Arabic. In Hebrew, it means evil.”

The organization gained popular support in the territory in part because of its uncompromising position toward Israel, expressing in its covenant the conspiracy theories of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and a commitment to wage war against the Jews and “raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine.”

In 1989, Yassin ordered Hamas to kidnap Israeli soldiers inside Israel, to murder them and bury their bodies in a manner that would allow Hamas to negotiate the exchange of bodies for Hamas prisoners, who would be released from jails in Israel. Yassin was arrested after the abduction and murder of IDF soldier Ilan Sa’adon, and the discovery of the body of IDF soldier Avi Sasports, who was also abducted and murdered.

Hamas became the principal instigator of suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks beginning in 2000. Although he was not a religious authority, he was referred to as “Sheikh Yassin,” because of his status as leader of Hamas.

On March 22, 2004, [Yassin] was killed in an Israeli helicopter missile strike on his car as he was leaving a mosque in the northern Gaza Strip.

Impersonating an Islamic holy man? Invoking Allah’s will in the indiscriminate murder of innocents? Israel did decent, God-fearing Muslims a favor by eliminating this messianic psycho.

What a stain he was (literally!) on the Religion of Peace™.

Another Memorial

The Nazis killed Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Catholics—you name it.

But we can’t forget these people:

Work has begun on a memorial in Germany for the 300,000 people murdered by the Nazis for having mental and physical disabilities or chronic illnesses.

A 30m (100ft) long glass wall is being built in the centre of Berlin, near the former site of the Nazi-era office that organised the “euthanasia” programme.

In 1939, Adolf Hitler told officials that people “considered incurable” should be “granted a mercy killing”.

The programme ended officially in 1941, but continued covertly until 1945.

At first, personnel killed people by starvation and lethal injection. They later used gas chambers at killing centres in Germany and Austria.

The programme, also known as Action T4, is considered a precursor to the Holocaust, during which millions of Jews were killed.

On Monday, Germany’s State Minister for Culture, Bernd Neumann, said educating people about the Nazis’ crimes and honouring their victims remained an obligation for the country.

In recent years, memorials have been constructed in Berlin for Jewish, Roma (Gypsy) and homosexual victims of the Nazis.

Interesting how Hitler’s language (“mercy killing”) sounds like Margaret Sanger’s. She believed in “assist[ing] the race toward the elimination of the unfit.” But even the morally dubious founder of Planned Parenthood never foresaw the evil that would be done in her compromised name: “abortion was the wrong way no matter how early it was performed it was taking life”.

At least the Germans have apologized.

Tax Bill of a Young Girl:

Make it out to Amsterdam Revenue, sweetheart.

THE HAGUE (JTA) — The City of Amsterdam fined hundreds of Jewish Holocaust survivors for failing to pay taxes while they were in hiding or in concentration camps.

The affair was exposed in an article in Het Parool, a local daily, on March 30. Many of the houses in question were confiscated and used by members of the NSB Dutch Nazi party while the Jewish owners were in hiding or in camps.

The city went after survivors as late as 1947, the report said. Other Dutch municipalities waived such debts, Het Parool reported. The following year the city agreed to reimburse half of what it charged to some Jews who were taxed in absentia. The city’s archives contain 342 requests for reimbursement, Het Parool reported.

About 75 percent of Holland’s pre-World War II Jewish population of 140,000 was murdered in the Holocaust, according to the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel, a Hague-based watchdog on anti-Semitism which is known locally by its acronym CIDI.

Ronny Naftaniel, CIDI’s senior advisor, told JTA that although the discovery was “shocking,” there have been various reports of the city’s conduct after World War II, though “few facts were known. The City of Amsterdam has never, to my knowledge, taken steps to correct its actions,” said Naftaniel, who used to serve as the treasurer of Holland’s Central Jewish Board, or CJO.

The Dutch like to tell themselves and the world that their resistance was every bit as heroic as the French. Instead, it seems to have been even more inflated and craven. We’ve written about this before. Even Himmler or Eichmann (or one of those Nazi maggots) marveled at the eagerness of the Dutch in ratting out the Jews in their midst. This news isn’t worse than the Holocaust itself, but it fills the outlines of the monstrous behavior of so many Europeans.

Revisionist History

Not all revisionist history is good, not all of it bad. Sometimes, it just is.

Too often, however, the approach of the revisionist historian is to cut the subject down to size. Not to reveal, not to explain, but to diminish. And too often the historian is an unreconstructed Marxist.

Okay, Lefties, how do you like revisionist history now?

In our house, FDR was not merely the president. He was a god.

He is a god no more. His New Deal is no longer solely credited with ending the Great Depression — World War II did that — and the war in Europe was not won, as we all once thought, primarily by the United States but more so by the Soviet Union. Yet these, to my mind, are trifles compared to the criticism that Roosevelt was passive in the face of the Holocaust. It’s not that he did nothing, it’s that he did nothing much.

This accusation of immense moral failure — or indifference — is now being addressed by a new book, “FDR and the Jews,” by Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman. It sets out to find a middle ground and instead makes things worse. It is a portrait of a president who, in the authors’ own words, “did not forthrightly inform the American people of Hitler’s grisly ‘Final Solution’ or respond decisively to his crimes.” This is a Roosevelt who almost always had a more pressing political concern — American isolationism, American anti-Semitism, a fear and hatred of immigrants — and who stayed mum while a bill to allow 20,000 Jewish children into the United States died in Congress.

Roosevelt inattentively also permitted a cabal of heartless anti-Semites in the State Department to control the country’s visa policies. Desperate Jews, fleeing from the Nazis, were denied asylum in the United States. One of them was Otto Frank. His daughter Anne perished at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Both FDR and his wife, Eleanor, were genteel anti-Semites — although the president had Jewish aides and one close Jewish friend, his neighbor Henry Morgenthau Jr. Eleanor, a woman not afraid to confront her own prejudices, later became a champion of Jewish causes, but the record for the president on this score is hardly as redeeming. As late as 1943, at the Casablanca Conference, he sympathized with a French general’s observation that the Jews were overrepresented in the professions. FDR referenced the “understandable complaints which the Germans bore towards the Jews.”

Genteel anti-Semites: what a perfect description. Not just of the Roosevelts, but of a whole American class at the time.

The writer here, Richard Cohen, is no rabid Libertarian, drooling to bring down Roosevelt’s reputation. He is as solid an establishment liberal as there is—though not completely mindless (as contradictory as those assertions are).

What’s extremely worrying however, is not necessarily the truth of the matter (if any such thing can be determined), but the willing suspension of any inquiry or curiosity. The uselessness of the New Deal had long been suspected or known before Amity Shlaes finally drove a stake through its bleeding heart. The contribution of the Soviet Union to the defeat of Nazi Germany had only been hinted at.

And Roosevelt was given a pass on the Holocaust because he was trying to defeat the Nazis.

Roosevelt was a man of his times. His anti-Semitism was so common it would have been almost noteworthy if it were absent. But Thomas Jefferson, too, was a man of his times — a slaveholder like his Virginia contemporaries — yet his greed or his hypocrisy can hardly be overlooked or, maybe, forgiven.

It is the same with Roosevelt. His exuberant humanity, his political brilliance, his triumph in possibly saving the American free enterprise system — all this and so much more cannot negate the fact that he did not confront the biggest crime in all history with everything at his disposal.

Back in 1945, my mother thought a god had died. We know now he was just a man, not so great as he once appeared. Increasingly and deservedly, his reputation is being consumed by the very Holocaust he ignored.
