Charles Krauthammer He Ain’t [UPDATED]
How is the Holocaust shooter supposed to be a member of the religious right?
A review of his lengthy associations reveals Von Brunn hardly fits the stereotype of a Religious Right, GOP precinct captain. He denounced the Christian faith as a dastardly Jewish conspiracy, a “HOAX” invented by the Apostle Paul to “DESTROY ROMAN CULTURE” from within by undermining its pagan virility. (All screaming capitalization and grammatical errors in this piece appear in the original.) Like others on the racist fringe, the shooter proclaimed clearly: “SOCIALISM, represents the future of the West.”
Never apt to let facts get in the way of slander, the Left immediately branded Von Brunn a conservative – and found a way to tie his actions to their favorite demons: President Bush and Fox News. Upon learning of the tragedy, Huffington Post blogger Michelle Kraus wrote simply, “Thank you very much Karl Rove and your minions.” Fellow HuffPo scribbler Joseph Palermo, – also, surprise, an Associate Professor of History at California State University-Sacramento – accused Fox News host Glenn Beck of “using the public airwaves to incite violence,” calling his program “a white reactionary tour de force – incendiary, stupid, and racist.” The usually more staid Alan Colmes smeared the mainstream conservative website FreeRepublic.com, an attack quickly recycled by a ThinkProgress.org reader, who added this sterling political analysis: “There isn’t really a line drawn between the right wing ‘base’ and neo-Nazis any more. It’s a single continuum, and freepers is right there in that gray area.”
I’m tempted to say that Von Brunn represents the Right the way, I don’t know, Che Guevara represents the Left—but von Brunn doesn’t and Che does.
UPDATE
If von Brunn is a Republican, he has a funny way of showing it:
He railed against Fox News and Rupert Murdoch.
And now this:
FBI agents visited the offices of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine yesterday after a shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum and told employees they’d found the magazine’s address.
…
Von Brunn’s published rants included attacks on “neocons,” and the Standard has been at the heart of the neoconservative movement.
The suggestion that the Standard may have been a target complicates any view of the racist shooter in contemporary left-right terms.
Actually, it simplifies it. As Rush has been observing today, this guy sounds indistinguishable from the radical left wing extremists, who hated both Bushes (check) and think 9/11 was an inside job (check).
Oh yeah, and ain’t too fond of Jews, either (double-check).
