Henrietta the Plumber

The title is a joke, of course, as Joe actually plumbed, while Henrietta and her son didn’t even own a bathroom.

The rest of Henrietta’s story is a joke too:

Before making a nationwide media splash with her savior President Barack Obama at the Ft. Myers revival rally, Henrietta Hughes had garnered public attention before. In 2004, she was living with her unemployed son in Rochester, NY. Good-hearted private citizens offered them help then, too, to supplement the government checks.

Corey Hughes ‘ thyroid gland was bothering him - again. He needed medical attention, but had no money to get it. Hughes , 33, a computer programmer who lives in Rochester, has no steady job, no health insurance, no doctor.

So, when Dr. Carolyn Mok examined him June 2 at Mercy Outreach Center on Webster Avenue, not only did Hughes get necessary treatment for his thyroid condition, he also took comfort in something else: the service was free.

Hughes , who has not had a steady job for two years, recently took on temporary work for Superior Staffing Services, 26 Corporate Woods.

It’s tough, says the Monroe Community College graduate.

“I can’t even get a job at Wendy’s (after applying more than once),’’ he says, but “I feel good. I’m thankful to God.’’

Talk to Julio at McDonald’s, Corey. He’s held a job there for four and a half years (somehow).

Before we give away the store to the Hughes family (they’ve already got a house and a web site), let’s note that they’ve been receiving free medical care for as long as Julio’s been at the fry-o-lator at Mickey-D’s.

The story also notes that Mrs. Hughes borrowed money to move down to Florida from Rochester, New York.

The best that can be said of Henrietta Hughes and her son—the best—is that America is there for you if you are absolutely incapable of taking care of yourself. I am considerably older than 33, and have a “thyroid condition” myself, so I’m skeptical of Corey’s disability.

But if he wants to declare his inadequacy and impotence, if his mom wants to beg the commander in chief for a sink and a toilet (in what has been all but proved to be a staged event), we are not a nation that turns them away.

I don’t know if the meek shall inherit the earth or not—but the pathetic might come into possession of a bidet.

Patterico has more.
