That Little Old President, Me

What do you see at whithouse.gov?

For those who don’t remember, Italian Swiss Colony Wine used to run ads on TV featuring “that little old winemaker, me.”

Barack Obama has been packaged, prepared, wrapped, sealed, and marketed like a cheap jug wine. Or like any other commercial product. Double-ply bathroom tissue, spaghetti sauce, motor oil, laundry detergent. I haven’t seen women swoon for a product like him since Scotch Brite came up with the disposable toilet scrubber.

A close friend who works in marketing made the same point about Obama last summer. She said: He’s definitely going to win because that is the best marketing campaign I’ve ever seen.

Not going to happen, Martino. We made our bed, we have to spend some time in it. The rot goes so deep, I don’t know how we get out of it. We have how many years of schoolchildren who have been trained from day one to think that “critical” is a very bad word instead of a way to think. This makes them horribly easy to persuade and convince of, apparently, anything. And you know that the teachers unions have no motivation at all to offer hope of an education or a change of methods.

Every morning, my local radio station plays the national anthem. Since November 4, I keep getting the feeling that it’s the last time. Melodramatic, probably, but I don’t know if we can overcome the rotted brains of the Obamatrons.

To Carol: I concur, but with reservations. I submit that we have been in this situation for generations now. It has little to do with who gets elected or how - we let the media tell us how to brush our teeth, what food to buy, and ultimately, who to elect (or not to). Our elected officials are paraded on tv like American Idol contestants and we vote for the one with the right look and manner on tv regardless of whether they have the ability to do what they’re on the show for. To single out Obama or McCain for blame or scorn is pointless. We’ve been told how to react to them for years and we are doing it by rote because of it.

Still in all, I like the “Little Old Winemaker” ad. I used to see it on tv all the time as a kid. The actor who played him is Ludwig Stossel (the voice was dubbed in by Jim Backus) and Stossel appeared in “Casablanca” in the crowd scene as the man whose watch is stolen. He also appears in an episode of “The Phil Silvers Show” and in the Elvis flick “GI Blues” playing variations of the winemaker character.
