They Seem Serious To Me

I think that Israel really does plan to mess with Hamas

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Sunday rejected an offer by a Russian envoy to contact Hamas via Russia in order to reach a cease-fire with the Palestinian militant group in Gaza.

“We are serious in our intention to harm Hamas and we have no intention to give them legitimize them and pass messages on to them. We have nothing to discuss with Hamas,” Livni told Alexander Saltanov, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s special envoy to the Middle East.

Aside from the odd translation, it makes sense to me. We’ll see. Some pundits have pointed out that the Israeli public is absolutely fed up with the situation in the south, AND that there are elections in February. This means that no political party in Israel can afford to go wussy.

Is it not a retelling of a fact of life that Isreal should look to Russia (aka the Soviet Union) to facilitate contacts with terrorists? It only makes sense to go to those who train, equip, and provide intelligence to the terrorists when it comes to opening talks with the terrorists.
