The Marty Presidency [UPDATED]
What do you wanna do, Barack?
I don’t know, Joe, what do you wanna do?
Paddy Chayevsky: waaaay ahead of his time:
President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team has begun examining what to do with suspected terrorists at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which Obama has pledged to close, an aide said Monday.
…
Denis McDonough, a senior adviser to the incoming Democrat, said no decisions have been made about what to do with the 255 inmates there, “and there is no process in place to make that decision until his national security and legal teams are assembled.”
…
In an October 31 interview with CNN, Obama said only that he would close the facility “as quickly as we can do prudently.”
“I am not going to give a time certain because I think what we have to do is evaluate all those who are still being held in Gitmo,” he said. “We have to put in place appropriate plans to make sure they are tried, convicted and punished to the full extent of the law, and that’s going to require, I think, a review of the existing cases, which I have not had the opportunity to do.”
President Bush said in 2006 that he would like to close the prison, but said it needed to remain open to house what he called “cold-blooded killers.” In May, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told a Senate committee that efforts to shut down the facility were stuck over what to do with the inmates.
Don’t put those waterboards in storage just yet! It might not be “prudent”.
He’s only been running for president for four years; it wouldn’t be fair to expect him to have a freakin’ clue what to do about national security.
UPDATE
Because it’s not like others haven’t been making plans:
On November 9, 2008, the London daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported, citing “a source close to the Al-Qaeda leadership in Yemen,” that Osama bin Laden had ordered a new attack on the U.S. which will be “far greater than the 9/11 attacks.”
The paper said the source was “a former Al-Qaeda commander who is still in touch with… the organization leadership, and who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons.”
According to the source, the attack is meant “to change the world [both] politically and economically,” and is planned for the near future.
UPPERDATE
And it’s not like they haven’t been working on related issues:
Hamas political adviser Ahmad Yousef revealed Tuesday morning that prior to the US general elections, a secret meeting was held between officials from the group and President-elect Barack Obama’s advisers in the Gaza Strip.
“We are maintaining contact with them”, said Yousef who disclosed no further information as to the nature of the meeting.
In an interview with the London-based Al Hayat newspaper, Yousef reportedly said that contact between Hamas and Obama’s advisers was first established over the Internet.
“We first made contact on the Internet and then met with some of them here in the Gaza Strip. They advised us not to reveal this information lest it influence the elections or become manipulated by [Republican candidate John] McCain’s campaign”.

Ed Morrissey is justifiably skeptical:
Color me skeptical on this story. It sounds like the blowhards at Hamas are doing what they normally do — trying to inflate their importance and influence among readers of Arab-language newspapers and spinning conspiracy theories for their own benefit.
Color me the same color, because I find either scenario plausible.
