A Word to the Right

As a recovering liberal, I have a few words of counsel and encouragement to my new colleagues on the right.

John McCain is not that bad.

Hardly words to inspire one in battle, I know, but I think you’ll find they’ll do. I publicly supported Giuliani, and would have thrilled to Thompson, but McCain will do me just fine.

And, yes, I’m aware of McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy and all the other betrayals of conservative principles. I won’t try to convince you that he’s anything he’s not.

But no different from Hillary or Obama? Have you lost your minds?

I’m a national security conservative, first and foremost, and the comparison between the parties on that front doesn’t withstand a nanosecond of scrutiny. But for the rest of you who are threatening to stay home in November, I don’t want to hear one peep when Keith Olbermann is appointed Ambassador to the United Nations, or Supreme Court Justice Naomi Wolf raises her right hand and swears on Das Kapital. Not one peep.

You’re hurt, and you’re frustrated, and I understand. But as a Massachusetts resident (whose vote for Romney in ‘02 was his first ever for a Republican), I can tell you that you probably aren’t missing anything by Mitt’s defeat.

You can live with John McCain. Again, not exactly bumper sticker material, but you can live with John McCain. More important, so can the country.

I hear ya. I was a lefty back in the day as well. I too am a Fred Thompson guy. I was surprised to see McCain get an 82.3% rating from the American Conservative Union. My problem is that the 18% is on issues that are very serious to many of us. As a security conservative, his lack of understanding the border is hugely worrisome to me. His wont to punish all of us with McCain Feingold because he was corrupted once is a very liberal trait. So, it’s not just issues, it’s a pattern of thinking. But all in all, I know what you are saying. We are very frustrated, but to think there’s no difference between Hillary/Obama and McCain is just not tenable.

Much needed words of encouragement - thank you. I was more than taken aback when I heard Romney was out. Let the game begin……
