Mukasey at the Bat

He swings!

Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Friday rejected lawmakers’ demands for information as the Justice Department investigates the destruction of tapes showing CIA interrogations of two al Qaeda suspects.

In letters to the House and Senate Judiciary committees, Mukasey also said he would not appoint a special prosecutor to conduct the investigation, as some lawmakers had requested.

Mukasey said he would not turn over the material key congressional leaders are seeking because doing so might be seen as bowing to “political influence.”

“At my confirmation hearing, I testified that I would act independently, resist political pressure and ensure that politics plays no role in cases brought by the Department of Justice.”

And the crowd goes wild!

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, said he was disappointed by the decision and indicated a confrontation with the new attorney general will come early next year.

“I will ask Attorney General Mukasey — in public and on the record — more about the department’s knowledge of and role in the existence and destruction of these videotapes at the committee’s next oversight hearing, which I intend to call early next year.”

You do that, Pat. Washington’s been devoid of empty political theater lately.

Especially after this latest flop.

The Democrat meltdown continues–and finally, a Senate defense bill will get to the president’s desk. With no timetable strings attached.

“The Democratic-led Congress authorized more Iraq war spending on Friday, sending President George W. Bush a defense bill requiring no change in strategy after failing again to impose a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawals.

“The defense policy bill, approved 90-3 by the U.S. Senate, also expanded the size of the U.S. Army and set conditions on the Bush administration’s plan to build a missile defense system in Europe.”

90-3!

After the fuss they made? You’re not going to tell me that you-know-who was among the 90, are you?

YEAs—90

Leahy (D-VT)

Oh baby! Is there a sweeter sight than when uppity liberal senators get put back in their place?

Senators Biden, Clinton, Dodd, and Obama were spared the ignominy of having to support the troops, as they were on the campaign trail at the time of the vote.
