Boys Will Do Boys

Terri at I Think Therefore I Err is kind enough to link to us here, even when she’s got her own insight and take on the same stories.

Let me return the favor:

In a BBC item on gender inequality in China you have the re-cap:

The Chinese government says it is drafting new laws to tackle the growing gender imbalance caused by the widespread abortion of female foetuses.

And then this statement by the UN:

The UN recommends a gender ratio of no more than 107.

Female infanticide isn’t funny, but those two statements above are. “new laws” to have girls? (actually it’s just laws with harsher punishments for aborting girls) and the UN has a gender ratio recommendation? ROFL

Terri’s right that this story is and isn’t funny. The story makes clear that China is hugely overbalanced toward boys, well above the UN’s recommended “limit”: one city has 163 boys to 100 girls. You ever seen 63 pissed off Chinese young men? Multiply that by a billion, and give it time. Either that, or China is going to have an explosion of interior decorators in thirty years.

I’d like to ask why is the UN in the business of justifying a “reasonable” amount of gynocide, but 107 seems to fall within the observed range of sex ratios found around the world. In other words, 107 doesn’t necessarily mean you’re killing anyone.
