Facebook Fascists

What next, My Race?

The popular social-networking Web site Facebook has removed a page that called for the murder of Jews, after receiving a query on the matter from The Jerusalem Post.

The page, which belonged to a group that called itself “anti-semitism,” listed dozens of members under a tagline that said, “We hate Jews so we must kill them.”

It also contained a photo album labeled “we must kill the Jews” which contained numerous anti-Semitic images.

Contacted by the Post on Monday, Facebook took down the page within hours of receiving the inquiry.

“The page you reference does in fact violate our policies and has been removed,” Elizabeth Linder, a spokesman for Facebook, told the Post via e-mail, adding that, “It would be fair to say that the page was removed after you brought it to our attention.”

And it’s not the first time it’s happened:

A anti-Israeli Facebook group that once had more than 48,000 members is being “destroyed” by a secretive group called the Jewish Internet Defense Force.

Its old profile photo - a map of Palestine - has been replaced with an image of an Israeli fighter jet, and its front page contains a statement from the JIDF. The group’s location has been chaged to “Jerusalem, Israel”.

“This group was one of the most vile, antisemitic, pro-terrorist sites on the internet,” the statement reads.

“Despite thousands of user complaints over the course of eighteen months, Face book allowed this group and its ubiquitous antisemitic lies to flourish,” it continues.

“Facebook’s own negligence and abdication of responsibility gave us no option but to take matters in our own hands.”

In fact, anti-Semitism on social networks is a growing phenomenon:

Facebook, Holocaust Denial, and Anti-Semitism 2.0

I’ve got to go baste my turkey and walk my dog, but Google Facebook and Anti-Semitism for an education.
