Mealy, Wormy, and Bruised
He’s going to need a whole orchard of apples to keep the medical examiner away:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 28% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -12. That’s the lowest rating yet recorded for President Obama.
…
Overall, 48% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. That is the lowest level of total approval yet recorded for this President. Fifty-one percent (51%) now disapprove. A plurality of voters now believe the President views American society as unfair and discriminatory.
I’m sorry, can you repeat that last point? “A plurality of voters now believe the President views American society as unfair and discriminatory.”
What does that mean? [Link to video]
Gatesgate has fully played out, and Obama is desperate to bury aged Americans—hatchet!—I mean hatchet.
But the public has begun to take the measure of the man. Why it took them so long to judge someone who took off his flag lapel pin after 9/11, who practically adjusted his package rather than put his hand over heart during the national anthem, who dismissed his grandmother as a “typical white person”—why they waited so long to believe such a person “views American society as unfair and discriminatory” is a mystery to me. But not everyone is as sharp as Aggie and I.
Which is why they need to read BTL. Hop on the bus, and leave the thinking to us.

The Cynical Half of the Team Here:
I think that as his numbers drop, the folks that want to be in the acceptable middle will jump onto the bandwagon. They don’t actually think about the underlying issues, they simply need to be conventional and acceptable to friends and neighbors. People are very, very sensitive to what the neighbors think, (or drive, or wear). That had a lot to do with why Bush was so despised. You get a critical mass of people to move in a certain direction and the couch potatoes jump in. This has nothing to do with actual policy or ethics or anything rational.
I’m thrilled that this seems to be happening, but believe it could change on a dime. He is a gifted politician and people want to trust him and like him.

What I like about BTL is my impression that, despite what’s stated here, you like us to think.

I wish everyone would take thinking up as a habit. Kind of like realizing that exercise really does make you feel better, even though the first few minutes is often a drag.
But I honestly believe that the reason that people don’t “think” is that they have a need to fit into their own peer group. They adjust their “opinions” to meet the expectations of the peer group in order to feel comfortable and be invited to picnics.
