Remember the scene in Chinatown when Jack Nicholson discovered that all the potentially valuable land that had recently been sold had evidently been bought by residents in a nearby nursing home? That their names had been used to cover up the identity of the real buyer? You don’t?

Well, Team Obama does:

More than a week ago, I noted the story of a south Georgia disabled man whose family says an adult rehab house aide commandeered his vote and pushed him into marking his ballot for Obama. “They told me to vote for Obama, I said no I wanted to vote for McCain,” Jack Justice told WALB-TV.

Now, there’s another report of disabled voters who appear to have been exploited by Obama followers. The new story comes from California:

The California Republican Party is asking the secretary of state to investigate an organized voting campaign involving developmentally disabled adults in Tuolumne County.

As many as ten clients of the Thumbs Up! adult care center have already cast absentee ballots under the supervision of center director David Simerley, and nearly all of them were for Barack Obama.

“We all registered to vote and we all sat together as a group and went over our ballots and voted,” Simerley told News10.

Among those voting was Michael Rascon, 56, whose father described him as having the mental capacity of a 5-year-old.

“What kind of people would do this to somebody like that,” asked Sam Rascon, who discovered his son had registered and voted only after seeing him with an Obama button last Thursday. “He wouldn’t know one candidate from another.”

News10 spoke to Michael Rascon at the Thumbs Up! center about the election. When asked which candidate he’d voted for, Rascon answered “the black man.” He was unable to remember Obama’s name.

By which declaration he proved he knew just as much about Barack Obama as his average supporter.

Someone needs to tell Obama’s “people” that California is safely his, they don’t need to coerce the mentally disabled there. Tell them to go after the feeble-minded of Pennsylvania and Virginia and New Hampshire among whom they’re already solid.

How to steal an election

A RECENT story that didn’t get nearly the attention it deserved was the New York Daily News report that 46,000 registered New York City voters are also registered to vote in Florida. Nearly 1,700 of them have had absentee ballots mailed to their home in the other state, and as many as 1,000 have voted twice in the same election. Can 1,000 fraudulent votes change an election? Well, George W. Bush won Florida in 2000 by just 537 votes.

It is illegal to register to vote simultaneously in different jurisdictions, but scofflaws have little to worry about. As the Daily News noted, “efforts to prevent people from registering and voting in more than one state rely mostly on the honor system.” Those who break the law rarely face prosecution or serious punishment. It’s easy — and painless — to cheat.

I learned this firsthand in 1996, when I registered my wife’s cat as a voter in Cook County, Ill., Norfolk County, Mass., and Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and then requested absentee ballots from all three venues. My purpose wasn’t to cast illegal multiple votes but to demonstrate how vulnerable to manipulation America’s election system has become.

It was a simple scam to pull off. “Under the National Voter Registration Act — the `Motor Voter Law’ — states are required to accept voter registrations by mail,” I wrote at the time. “No longer can citizens be asked to make a trip to town hall or the county office. No longer do they have to provide proof of residence or citizenship. In fact, they don’t have to exist. Motor Voter obliges election officials to add to the voter list any name mailed in on a properly filled-out registration form. Anyone so registered can then request an absentee ballot — by mail, of course. The system is not only open to manipulation, it invites it.”

In response to our ACORN story earlier this morning, several readers dismissed the story, saying no big deal, just people trying to earn another five bucks per registration.

A man at the center of a voter-registration scandal told The Post yesterday he was given cash and cigarettes by aggressive ACORN activists in exchange for registering an astonishing 72 times, in apparent violation of Ohio laws.

“Sometimes, they come up and bribe me with a cigarette, or they’ll give me a dollar to sign up,” said Freddie Johnson, 19, who filled out 72 separate voter-registration cards over an 18-month period at the behest of the left-leaning Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

“The ACORN people are everywhere, looking to sign people up. I tell them I am already registered. The girl said, ‘You are?’ I say, ‘Yup,’ and then they say, ‘Can you just sign up again?’ ” he said.

Looks like a nice young man, if a little naive. Cosmic shame on the cynical APORN people for exploiting him.

ACORN is riddled with rot. This has been obvious to most people for a long time. But when they started registering as voters the likes of Mork N. Mindy, Weezey Jefferson, Oscar Meyer, Mortimer Snerd, and Professor Poopypants—all as Democrats—the Feds got suspicious. Everyone knows Snerd was a Libertarian.

More than 2,000 voter registration forms filed in northern Indiana’s Lake County by a liberal activist group this week have turned out to be bogus, election officials said Thursday.

The group — the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN — already faces allegations of filing fraudulent voter registrations in Nevada and faces investigations in other states.

ACORN… now where have I heard of that organization before?

“All the signatures looked exactly the same,” Ruthann Hoagland, a Republican on the board. “Everything on the card filled out looks exactly the same.”

The forms included registrations submitted in the names of the dead — and in one case, the name of a fast-food restaurant, Jimmy Johns.

And you thought I was kidding about Oscar Meyer.

Over the past four years, a dozen states have investigated complaints of fraudulent registrations filed by ACORN. On Tuesday, Nevada authorities raided an ACORN office in Las Vegas, Nevada, where workers are accused of registering members of the Dallas Cowboys football team. And the group has become the target of Republican attacks on voter fraud, a perennial GOP issue.

A subsidiary of the group was paid $800,000 by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign to register voters for the 2008 primaries, and ACORN’s political wing endorsed Obama back in February. But Obama’s campaign told CNN that it “is committed to protecting the integrity of the voting process,” and said it has not worked with ACORN during the general election.

Lake County elections officials have set aside all 5,000 of the ACORN-submitted applications in what Hoagland called the “fake pile” for later review. But she said every one will be reviewed before the election to make sure no legitimate voters are skipped.

“We have no idea what the motive behind it is,” she said. “It’s just overwhelming to us.”

Here’s a hint, ma’am. Obama worked for ACORN in his “community organizer” days.

Instead of observing snidely that the GOP always questions fraudulent Democratic voter registration, the reporter (and all news organizations) might instead wonder why Edward R. Murrow and Howard K. Smith are listed as active voters in Chicago’s 8th ward.
