To Her Good Health

Barack Obama’s grandmother, a “typical white person” is ill, and I’m very sorry to hear that. Not only because I tend to like grandmothers, but because I like most of the white people I know, too (unlike some of my more testy readers):

Senator Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life. Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college. As he said at the Democratic Convention, she poured everything she had into him.

Recently, his Grandmother has become ill, and in the last few weeks, her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason that Senator Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her. He will be returning the the campaign trail on Saturday.

Our best wishes to the Dunham, Obama, and related families.

I can understand Obama’s decision to take time off to be with her, and I respect and admire the decision.

But it makes the decision to bench Joe Biden all the more puzzling indeed. Two weeks until election day, and Team Obama is going at half-strength for the next few days:

According to campaign sources, Joe Biden has no events planned for today — despite the election being only two weeks away. What happened? Could Team Obama have pulled Slow Joe off the trail after telling people that Barack Obama’s election would provoke our enemies into a confrontation with us, and maybe more than one?

A bound and gagged Biden could only be an improvement, so I regret the move. Running out Madeleine Albright is a pretty lame response.

Anyway, he may be so far ahead, Obama could stay in Hawaii and surf for the next two weeks, and still win by eight points.

But it’s still pretty strange.

Get well, Mrs Dunham.

Strange Family

Obama spends an hour with his typical white grandmother but Michelle and the kids are nowhere to be found.

Obama — escorted by Secret Service and accompanied by a few campaign staff and a pool of reporters and camera crews — arrived at about 4:10 p.m. yesterday and spent an hour with his 85-year-old maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him. He was not accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters.

Isn’t that special?
