Greek Temples Here and There
I looked all over the internet this morning for suitable photographs comparing Pergamon Temple to the Obama Temple in Invesco stadium where Obama spoke last night.
Let me explain. Have you ever visited the Pergamon Museum in Berlin? This is a collection of ancient sculptures, statues, and a full Temple which the Germans took from Turkey. If you ever find yourself in Berlin, I highly recommend a visit to this museum. The Temple is a beautiful Pagan temple and Hitler used an exact replica as a prop for his speeches. He thought that the Temple conferred power and authority to his person. He would stand in the Temple and talk to enormous adoring crowds. So, I wanted images to compare the two Temples: last night at Invesco stadium and back in the Nazi era.
Let’s avoid the religious sub-context (that stuff is too weird for me), and just focus our attention on the architecture. Remarkable how the two Temples look so much alike, isn’t it? Probably just a coincidence…
The New York Times has a great photo of the Obama Temple up on the website this morning.
