Great Moments in American Oratory

And all from Berlin:

And who can forget this gem from 2008?

At the time, it was trumpeted by the Obama campaign as a defining moment, drawing comparisons with John F. Kennedy’s ‘ich bin ein Berliner’ speech and Ronald Reagan’s ‘tear down this wall’.

Looking back, however, there are probably good reasons why Team Obama might want to forget the address, in which Obama spoke of ‘global citizenship’ and vowed to ‘remake the world once again’.

He praised the United States but also told Germans that his country had done wrong. ‘I know my country has not perfected itself,’ he said.

‘At times, we’ve struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We’ve made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions.’

John Kerry is so right: we have a right to be stupid. Even in the highest office in the land.
