What makes this moment extra precious, of course, is that the audience is a roomful of fellow elected officials. Literally everyone there is accountable to voters. So naturally the voters’ window on the proceedings needs to be shut.
“Clear out the press so we can take some questions.” What a profoundly undemocratic utterance.
Is there no one in the WH Press Corpse with the stones to stay put? Who would dare them to carry him or her out? You don’t have to answer that.
We rely on you people to hold officials accountable. It’s why the press is called the fourth estate, a pillar of an informed society. It’s one thing for the pillar to crumble, but a sad and frustrating and dispiriting thing for the pillar to voluntarily crumble itself.
