Aggie, I actually saw this happen on Storrow Drive in Boston. Some of the underpasses there have only a ten-foot clearance, clearly marked. Didn’t stop the U-Haul rental truck from trying, though! Kaboom! Not quite as funny when it happens five or six car lengths in front of you at 45 mph.
I once was helping an acquaintance move to Long Island. I was driving behind the guy driving the rental truck (not a professional trucker.) We were on a road that trucks were not supposed to be on because it had overpasses held up by long, graceful arches that got very low on either side of the road. I found that out when the truck passed under one and one side of the roof peeled away like the top of a sardine can. All of a sudden a whole bunch of the moving family’s possessions flew out of the top of the truck right at my windshield. Luckily, most of the stuff was clothes and soft goods and I managed to dodge the hard goods. Oh yeah, one of the people moving was riding with me and filling my car with marijuana smoke as we drove along.
The driver stopped the truck and waited for the police to come while we picked up what we could. He must’ve had traffic backed up for 10 miles on a Saturday afternoon. Finally, the cops showed up and told him to just get the stupid truck off the road already. Don’t think he got a ticket. Thankfully, they never noticed the pot smoke emanating from my car. A day to forget.
